Stewart Small and Son, the long established family firm of
painters and decorators, have come a long way since their founding
in 1894 by the great grandfather of the present owner.
The original Stewart Small started as a one-man operation from
premises in Dudhope Park Crescent and the company have had strong
links with the Lochee area ever since. Subsequent moves to Lochee
Road, Cobden Street, Lochee Road again, then Cleghorn Street, before
moving into premises in Seagate, have seen the firm expand to the
point where it now employs a staff of 25.
The present owner, the third Stewart Small to spearhead the company,
has just been joined by his son Charlie, the fifth generation of the
family to become involved in the business.
Stewart is delighted to announce that the company will shortly be
renewing links with Lochee when they open a new spray shop at 8
brewery lane.
The move from West Pitkerro will see a new state of the art
facility, under the management of George Reilly, offering clients an
advanced service in modern premises. The new spray shop can
pre-finish new bar counters and bar fittings prior to installation
and can also refurbish existing fittings. Telephone Doug MacKinnon on
225444 (fax: 229444) for all your requirements.
Vinyl signage and traditional handlettering to shop front are
handled by the firm and there’s a full colour consultancy service to
assist clients in making the right choices.
The highly qualified staff regularly attend courses to hone their
skills in order to offer the very best service to the customer.
And service and quality are what it’s all about, according to
Stewart Small. The company’s notepaper bears these word from John
Ruskin: “The common law of business balance prohibits paying a
little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder it is
well to add something for the risk you run, and, if you do, then you
will have enough to pay for the something better,”
Although the company have taken on contracts abroad, Scotland is
home ground and they are busy on contracts in Edinburgh and
Aberdeen, as well as Dundee. Recently completed are contracts for
re-decorating at the Royal and Ancient at St Andrews and at the
royal residence Barmoral and Stewart says that his great grandfather
would have been tickled at the way the company has progressed from
his days of white washing pletties in Lochee!
